Applying from outside the UK

The National Health Service (NHS) is the largest single employer within the UK, employing over a million people, 5% of the working population.

There are numerous careers in over 70 professions within the NHS - this means there is something for everyone. The NHS is also anxious to reflect the local population it serves. To this end, it actively encourages applicants from a range of backgrounds, regardless of gender, age, religion or race, to apply for jobs. Applications are particularly welcome from professionally qualified Healthcare staff from outside the UK.

Person Specifications

Person Specifications are attached to all jobs advertised on the site. A Person Specification sets out the minimum requirements applicants will need to have in order to be considered for individual NHS jobs. Please ensure you have the relevant experience and qualifications before applying for a job.

Work Permits

A Work Permit will be required for applicants from outside the EEA. An employer will not be able to get a work permit for an applicant if the post can be filled by a UK or EEA resident and therefore are unlikely to consider applicants resident outside the EEA area if the post can be filled from within. NHS employers will indicate in their advertisements whether applicants from outside the UK will be considered.

International Recruitment of Healthcare Professionals

NHS Jobs adheres to the Code of Practice for the International Recruitment of Healthcare Professionals This promotes the best possible standards in international recruitment, and discourages any inappropriate practices which could harm other countries' healthcare systems or the interests of those who apply for posts. Further information is available here.

Further information for overseas qualified staff is given on NHS Careers. For further information see the Overseas Qualified Staff pages.

Professional Registration

Applicants for posts requiring professional registration need to register with the appropriate regulatory body.

If you are registered in your home country, but do not have UK registration, some NHS employers may provide support in achieving UK registration. The links below provide further information about regulation requirements.
